Sage School Readiness

School Readiness

At Sage, we embrace a holistic approach, ensuring that every aspect of our curriculum is interconnected and equally important. Our preschool teachers deliver school readiness across all developmental domains as well as building on their literacy, numeracy and self-help skills.

Our curriculum has evolved over many years of reflection and modification, leading us to understand the best approaches to early education. We believe we have developed a framework that effectively supports the roles of families and educators in a child’s learning experience. The child is at the centre of our curriculum, actively participating in their own learning.

This program aims to ensure that children enter school with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed.

Preparing for Kindergarten

Our integrated school readiness experiences focus on early literacy and numeracy as well as the social and emotional skills that support children in having the best start to school.  School readiness experiences are based on the ‘Best Start Initiative’. Some of the early literacy and numeracy areas covered are as follows:

Early Literacy:

  • Recognise First and Last name

  • Write First Name

  • Write Last Name (this is only introduced when your child is confident with writing their first name)

  • Recognise alphabet letter names and sounds

  • Attempt to write alphabet letters and numbers

Early Numeracy:

  • Counting to 20

  • Recognise numbers 1 to 20

  • Recognise colours and shapes

  • Basic addition and subtraction using objects

  • Simple repeating patterns and matching numbers to groups

Phonetic awareness

Phonetic awareness is an important part of children’s early literacy development. At our Service we use the Jolly Phonics program to support children in learning phonics. Jolly Phonics is embedded in the preschool weekly curriculum where children will learn phonics through repetition, characters, song and online games. Information on this program is shared with families so they can join in with supporting their child with phonics at home.

Kindergarten... Here I come!

Our learning booklets incorporate name, letter and number writing in NSW foundation handwriting which is taught in school. Children will be able to practice holding a pencil and writing and identifying letters and numbers to support their confidence in Kindergarten. These booklets also encourage children to practice recognise shapes and objects as well as drawing and colouring in.

Lunch box lessons

Our lunch box lesson sessions support children to practice using a lunch box in preparation for school. They will learn about how to open and close their lunch box and containers, unwrapping packaging, as well as making the right choices about what foods to eat for recess and lunch.
